So I tried Ketogenic Diet – Week 2

Dude, where's my carbs

Starting the third week of the diet, I think I have a pretty good idea about it’s effects now. I wouldn’t be able to scientifically explain how or why, but I feel the change. I see it too, on the weight scale, in the mirror. My curves are slowly melting, becoming more refine; my round face, sharper. If one can see it under the furnished beard.

Even though losing mass wasn’t one of my main goal (despite the fact that I really need it and it should be a priority) it simply happens. Vanquished is the hegemony of processed sugar and complex carbohydrates, but is it all worth it ? Somedays, I doubt. Briefly, but it happens.

How is it worth living in a world where you can’t enjoy the things you like, even with moderation ? Even if you are eating lavish meals, after two whole weeks, you realize that some basic ingredients are dearly missed, the same you laughed at after seven days. You can live without them, of course. Yet, a nice plate of pasta with meatballs. A simple BLT sandwich. It is little pleasures in life you willingly gave up.

The profusion of butcher’s choice meats and the gorgeous salads full of nuts and cheese make the loss bearable, but the scratch still itches. Even without realizing it clearly, you are tested again. So you start doing research, or you give up. I was not really disposed to abandon yet, so I followed the first option. And it was a revelation !

The big swapping game

The fruit bearing my new sugar. Appetizing.

Just follow me and you will see, it is easy as ABC. We already stated that sugar was the enemy, but after careful analyze it appears that different types of sugars exist and cohabit in this wonderful world. Quite a lot of them in fact, and the one that caught my attention is the erythritol.

How delightful. It looks like sugar, smells like sugar, tastes (almost) like sugar. It is, sugar, and is super keto friendly. Now you see where I am going. This opens the door to a whole side of nutrition that you probably (if you went all in without thinking like me) thought you had to abandon. Desserts, behold ! I am coming back ! But that is not all !

How about pasta and rice ? There is a solution for this too. The shirataki rice and noodles. What is this ? A little treasure from the Land of the Rising Sun, it is made from the konjac yam, and contains zero carbs. Niet. Of course, it is not gonna be the same as fresh wheat pasta, but it works !

The same goes to bread, because not only complex carbohydrate cereals can make flour, almonds can as well and do it perfectly. In fact, this kind of diet encourages creativity.

A little word about side effects

I just wanted to talk about something that have been happening to me since the beginning of the week. Now that the house is empty again during week days, leaving me alone most of the time tinkering with my computer for the whole day, I have a tendency to completely avoid. A coffee in the morning, and then nothing until diner.

Being on ketogenic diet makes this easy, becomes there is absolutely no feeling of hunger whatsoever. It is a double edged sword though. If I do not drink my electrolytes, I feel tired. Extremely tired, exhausted. Not able to keep my eyes open even.

So, for me, this is a problem. When I started, I heard it didn’t matter when you ate through the day, while on ketogenic diet, the only important thing, I thought, was to regulate and calculate the right quantity of macro-nutrients and calories per said days.

Well, if it is for me, I am a wreck without a gorgeous breakfast. Maybe it is only happening to me, maybe I am not totally converted yet to the new functioning mode of my body. In the next days I will keep on testing this, and tell you everything about it !

goodbye, not farewell

Now the experiment is settled, I will keep on going through it and come back to share the results in another month. I went through the hardest, I think. Especially as everyday, I realize that I do not have to abandon anything. It is just, different products, for almost the same sensations.

I was well prepared for this months ahead, when I moved in with my beloved girlfriend, who eats gluten free food. It was a sort of boot camp for keto diet. But just as it happened almost a year ago, the same result and conclusion is here today : It doesn’t matter what you eat, as long as it is yummy, right ?

I leave you here, on the right, a little note of hope. You can have alcohol on ketogenic diet ! Consume with moderation, of course. 😉 Stay strong, drink a lot of water, do a lot of exercise, and keep on stretching hard to reach your goals !
